Personally, I love The Odyssey. The adventure! The monsters! The loyal wife who can outsmart a lot of really dumb dudes!
But it takes a lot to get buy-in from students. Especially when this is a text that somehow always seemed to fall at one of those slumps in the year when everyone’s interest and energy is waning.
My solution? Make it a game! (Admittedly, that’s my solution to a lot of things.)
The gamified approach isn’t just slapping some points and badges on existing activities. That method of gamification never really worked for me. Instead, every activity requires team work, critical thinking, and — most importantly — reading and understanding the actual text.
Game Basics
I started by dividing my students into separate “boats.” Each boat was in charge of their own fate, which involves some decision making based on the events in the story — should they listen to the sirens or not? what should they do about Scylla and Charybdis?
Then, the teams investigate the text to identify, analyze, and explain a chosen theme from the poem. They earn points by finding the most examples AND by justifying their examples. But on top of that, some of the themes come with bonus points or booby traps.
Beyond the Game: Why This Works
I used this gamified approach for multiple years with my high school freshmen, and the difference was astounding! My students were buzzing with excitement, actively participating in class discussions, and even talking about it as they left the room! It’s a complete game-changer from the usual groans and sighs when faced with analyzing epic poetry.
Think about it: Instead of a dry lecture on fate, students are actively discussing, analyzing literature, and presenting their arguments to their team. Suddenly, The Odyssey isn’t just a dusty old book; it’s a thrilling adventure they’re actively participating in.
